About Barcelona
Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia and Spain's second-largest city, with about 1.7 million residents. The Romans founded it as Barcino around 15 BC, and their walls still surface in the Gothic Quarter. Modernista architects reshaped it around 1900, and the 1992 Olympics opened it up to the sea. In February 2026 the Sagrada Família reached 172.5 metres, making it the tallest church in the world.
What to pack for Barcelona
Barcelona has a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot, humid summers. Daytime highs are about 14°C in winter, 18-23°C in spring, 28°C in summer and 17-26°C in autumn. Comfortable walking shoes matter most, as Park Güell and Montjuïc are steep. Pack a swimsuit from June to September, a light layer for breezy evenings and a scarf to cover shoulders in churches.
