About Bologna

Bologna is the capital of Emilia-Romagna and a city of around 390,000 people in the fertile plain of northern Italy. It is famous for three things caught in its nicknames, la Dotta, la Grassa, la Rossa, the learned for its ancient university, the fat for its rich food, and the red for its rooftops and politics. Its medieval centre, wrapped in some forty kilometres of porticoes, is among the best preserved in Europe and a World Heritage Site.

What to pack for Bologna

Pack comfortable, broken-in walking shoes, as Bologna is covered on foot over hard stone and the climb to San Luca is long. Bring a scarf or light layer to cover shoulders and knees for the churches. Add sunglasses and sunscreen for hot, humid summers, and a warm coat and umbrella for cold, foggy winters. A refillable bottle lets you use the public fountains, and an appetite is the one thing you must not forget.
