About Cancún

Cancún is a planned city: the federal government began building it on 20 April 1970 on a near-empty barrier island where three caretakers tended coconut palms. Today the city has 888,797 inhabitants (2020 census), the largest in Quintana Roo, and its airport is the busiest in Latin America for international passengers. Its trademark is the 7-shaped Hotel Zone, with 22 km of beaches.

What to pack for Cancún

Average temperatures run from lows near 19 °C in January to highs around 34 °C in August, so pack light cotton, a hat and a light rain jacket. Cover shoulders and knees to enter churches. Mexico uses plug types A and B at 127 V, so bring an adapter if needed. The item people forget is biodegradable sunscreen, which reef and cenote trips ask for.
