About Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre, meaning the Five Lands, is a rugged stretch of the Italian Riviera in Liguria made up of five old fishing and farming villages: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. Linked by train, boat and cliffside footpaths, they cling to a coast of steep terraced vineyards built up over a thousand years. The whole area, home to only a few thousand residents, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.

What to pack for Cinque Terre

The single most useful thing to pack is a pair of sturdy, broken-in walking shoes, as every village is steep and the trails are rough. Add layers for cool mornings and evenings, a sun hat and sunscreen for the exposed paths, and a refillable water bottle for the village fountains. Bring a scarf to cover shoulders and knees for the churches, and a light rain jacket in spring and autumn.
