About Florence

Florence is the capital of Tuscany and the birthplace of the Renaissance, a compact city of around 360,000 people set on the river Arno and ringed by hills. From the thirteenth to the sixteenth century it grew rich on banking and the wool and silk trades, and under the Medici it became the greatest centre of art and learning in Europe. Its historic core is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, dense with churches, palaces and galleries.

What to pack for Florence

Pack comfortable, broken-in walking shoes, as Florence is covered on foot over hard stone streets. Bring a scarf or light layer to cover shoulders and knees for the churches, which enforce a dress code. Add sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen for the exposed squares and viewpoints in summer, and a light rain jacket in spring and autumn. A refillable bottle lets you use the city's drinking fountains for free.
