About Genoa
Genoa is the capital of Liguria and one of the great port cities of the Mediterranean, home to about six hundred thousand people on a narrow coast backed by steep hills. For centuries it was an independent maritime republic, a rich rival of Venice. That wealth built the palaces of Via Garibaldi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the largest medieval old towns in Europe, a warren of alleys called caruggi.
What to pack for Genoa
Pack comfortable shoes with good grip for the steep, cobbled alleys and the many stairs of the old town. Bring a light layer to cover shoulders and knees for the churches, which enforce a dress code. Add a compact umbrella or rain jacket, as Genoa is one of the wetter Italian cities, especially in autumn. Sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen help on the exposed seafront in summer, and a refillable bottle lets you use the public fountains.
