About Mexico City
Mexico City has about 9.2 million people, and more than 21 million live in its metropolitan area, the largest in North America. The Mexica founded Tenochtitlan on an island in Lake Texcoco in 1325, and the Spanish built their capital on its ruins after 1521. It sits at 2,240 m, and its historic centre, Xochimilco and the university campus are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
What to pack for Mexico City
Days are mild most of the year, often 20 to 27°C, but nights can fall to about 5°C in December and January, so pack layers. Cover shoulders and remove hats in the cathedral and the basilica. Sockets take Type A and B plugs at 127 V. People forget how strong the sun is at 2,240 m: bring sunscreen and a hat, plus a light rain jacket from June to September.
