About Naples

Naples is the capital of the Campania region and the largest city in southern Italy, home to about one million people, with some three million more in the metropolitan area around the bay. Founded by Greek settlers as Neapolis, the new city, it has been ruled in turn by Romans, Normans, Spanish and the Bourbon kings, who made it a brilliant European capital. Its dense historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Vesuvius looms over it all.

What to pack for Naples

Pack comfortable, sturdy shoes, as the old town is paved with hard, uneven basalt stones and some quarters climb steeply. Bring a scarf or light layer to cover shoulders and knees for the churches, which enforce a dress code. Add sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen for the exposed seafront and viewpoints in summer, and a light rain jacket for the wet autumn months. A refillable bottle lets you use the city's drinking fountains.
