About Nicosia
Nicosia, Lefkosia in Greek, has been lived in for more than 5,500 years and has been the capital of Cyprus since the 10th century. The south, the Republic's capital, had about 256,000 people in its urban area at the 2021 census. The old town sits inside a ring of Venetian walls from 1567, cut by the UN buffer zone that has divided the city since 1974.
What to pack for Nicosia
Average temperatures range from lows of about 6 °C in January to highs of about 37 °C in July. Bring clothes that cover shoulders and knees for churches and monasteries. Cyprus uses type G plugs, the British three-pin kind, at 230 V, so most visitors need an adapter. The item people forget is a sun hat, as the old town has little shade.
