About Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen is the second-largest city in Quintana Roo, with 304,942 people in the 2020 census. A fishing, coconut and chicle village for most of the 20th century, it had fewer than 1,500 residents until the mid-1980s and then grew on tourism, starting with the ferry to Cozumel. Its signature is Quinta Avenida, a pedestrian street a block from the Caribbean shore.
