About Turin
Turin is the capital of the Piedmont region in northwest Italy, a stately city of around 850,000 people set on the river Po with the Alps rising on the horizon. First capital of a united Italy in 1861, royal seat of the house of Savoy and later the industrial powerhouse of Fiat, it is a city of elegant baroque squares, arcaded avenues and grand museums that is often overlooked by visitors.
What to pack for Turin
Pack comfortable walking shoes for the stone streets and long arcaded avenues of the centre. Bring warm layers and a coat in winter, when fog and cold settle over the plain, and light clothes with sun protection for the hot, humid summers. Add a light rain jacket for the wetter spring and autumn, and a scarf or wrap to cover shoulders and knees for the churches, where a modest dress code applies.
