About Venice

Venice is the capital of the Veneto, built across 126 islands in a shallow Adriatic lagoon and linked by some 400 bridges. Fewer than 50,000 people now live in the historic centre, down from over 100,000 in the 1970s. Founded in the fifth century by mainlanders fleeing raids, it grew into a maritime republic that dominated Mediterranean trade for a thousand years. The city and its lagoon have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.

What to pack for Venice

Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes matter more here than anywhere, as you cross dozens of stepped bridges a day. Pack light, because with no cars you carry your own luggage from the boat stop. Bring a scarf to cover shoulders and knees for the basilica and major churches. Summers are hot, humid and full of lagoon mosquitoes; winters are damp and foggy, so add waterproof shoes for acqua alta from autumn into January.
